Tulip tree on a fall morning

Johnston Preserve
Tulip trees are so tall and straight and I learned more about them this year, particularly by looking at them in winter when the leaves are down. And I love looking up at the canopy and seeing how much the tree branches look like the root structures under the ground that we cannot see.

I love the play of shadow and light in this picture. Those strong dark trunks in the foreground remind me of guards and I love the light shining on the forest behind them.

This time of year, I make a point of enjoying the beauty of winter trees knowing they will soon be leafy and full and that I won’t see them again until December. The light was beautiful in the late afternoon and I looked up and there they were arms lifted to the sky.
